As we celebrate Wild Salmon Day on June 1st, we are excited to share recent highlights from our work.

Salmon Warriors Spring Gathering
Young adults from the Syilx Okanagan, Ktunaxa, and Secwépemc Nations met up for a three-day Salmon Warriors road trip in mid-May, joining in ceremonial fry releases in Castlegar, Slocan, and Revelstoke, followed by a second set of ceremonial releases in Invermere and Golden.
Along the way, the young people participated in storytelling and team building activities, connecting with Elders and Knowledge Keepers, and stepping into their roles as stewards of salmon and water.
Salmon Warriors helped with the community fry releases, attended by hundreds of school children as part of the Fish in Schools programs led by the Okanagan Nation Alliance in the West/Central Kootenays, and the Shuswap Band in the East Kootenays.
Last Fall, Salmon Warriors worked with the ONA’s fisheries team to collect broodstock in the Okanagan River, and harvest and fertilize the eggs in the kł cp̓əlk̓ stim̓ hatchery. It was incredibly moving to be able to release many of the resulting fry in the ceremonial releases throughout the upper Columbia in BC this Spring.

Klamath exchange
A delegation of Bringing the Salmon Home Initiative representatives was generously sponsored by Salmon Returns to travel to northern California and share learnings with Tribes in the Klamath/Six Rivers region, in early April. The trip included inspiring presentations on food sovereignty and a Big Time pow wow.
