Bringing the Salmon Home Transboundary Tour

Remember how powerful it can be to meet in person, rather than just in virtual space?! In place of our annual online festival in May, we’re stepping out with the launch of a year of in-person outreach activities from the headwaters to the mouth of the Columbia River. Just like salmon need the water to swim, we rely on human connection to keep moving forward together.

Syilx Okanagan, Secwépemc, and Ktunaxa Nation members will be gathering to celebrate the Bringing the Salmon Home Transboundary Tour launch on May 24-25, 2024, near Fairmont Hot Springs, BC. This tour is about leading from the heart and upholding ceremonial, cultural, and technical exchange with US Tribes and allies all along this One Great River.

The first tour stop will include discussions with high school students, followed by a community film screening at Golden Secondary School on Monday May 27 at 7pm. Stay tuned for news about more events as our journey unfolds.

Highlights of Our Work

Along with continued governance development and relationship building, we’ve been hard at work increasing our capacity in Indigenous knowledge, technical inquiry, communications, and cultural engagement. We are proud to share our Annual Report 2023-24.

New Technical Study

Check out our latest study that looks at the feasibility of reintroducing salmon to the Canadian portion of the Columbia River basin. It evaluates locations, donor stocks, and studies, focusing on spring chinook salmon, summer/fall chinook salmon, and sockeye salmon. Two strategies are proposed: a “stepping stone” approach and a “diversified” strategy. See the full report STUDY #2 Phase 1: Plan for Experimental Reintroduction of Anadromous Salmon into Upper Columbia River: Proposed Implementation, Monitoring, and Evaluation at this link.

Outstanding Excellence Award

Our 30 minute Bringing the Salmon Home documentary has garnered another award, this time for “Outstanding Excellence” from the Nature Without Borders International Film Festival. On Thursday May 16, our Bringing the Salmon Home film will open the Meadowlark Festival in Penticton (Dream Café, 6pm.) Tickets are going fast!
