Check out our new technical studies — and our 2023 highlights!

As 2023 comes to a close, we’re reflecting on a momentous year. Our Indigenous-led Initiative to reintroduce salmon to the upper Columbia River in Canada is a continuing generational effort. Read on as we celebrate steps we took this year to advance our work.

First, our most recent news: Our hardworking Technical Working Group has released the results of two major studies conducted over the past year – a Pilot Plan for Experimental Reintroduction of Anadromous Salmon into Upper Columbia River, and a Risk and Benefit Assessment of a Multi-year Salmon Reintroduction to the Upper Columbia River. More technical study reports are being finalized and will be published in the new year.

Here’s a recap of some of our highlights in 2023:

Diverse guests contributed their voices to the 2023 Bringing the Salmon Home Festival

In early May, we welcomed over 1,000 audience members to the third annual online Bringing the Salmon Home Festival. We heard from a wide range of guests, including elders, knowledge-keepers, artists, and scientists, about the cultural and environmental importance of salmon reintroduction.

We proudly debuted our 30 minute Bringing the Salmon Home documentary film, which showcases the history, values, and efforts driving our Initiative. Stay tuned for screenings coming to your community in the new year.

In early summer, we held the second Salmon Warriors Gathering at the sacred headwaters of the Columbia River, near Fairmont Hot Springs, BC. Elders, knowledge keepers, and leaders joined 21 young people from the Ktunaxa, Syilx Okanagan, and Secwépemc Nations for vital ceremonies, workshops, and shared cultural experiences.

On September 30th, Canada’s National Truth & Reconciliation Day, we released the powerful Bringing the Salmon Home Indigenous Knowledge Statement, created by the Syilx Okanagan, Ktunaxa, and Secwépemc members of our Indigenous Knowledge Counsel. This important statement guides and informs our collective work, upholding Indigenous worldviews and protocols.
