This National Indigenous Peoples Day we’re reflecting on our enduring generational work of Indigenous-led salmon reintroduction.
Bringing the Salmon Home Initiative members from the Syilx Okanagan, Secwépemc, and Ktunaxa Nations participated in a recent series of annual ceremonial salmon fry releases across the upper Columbia River watershed. Events took place in the Okanagan and East and West Kootenays. The sockeye fry were contributed by the Okanagan Nation Alliance’s kł cp̓əlk̓ stim̓ hatchery.
Indigenous Knowledge is foundational to our efforts to bring the salmon home to the upper Columbia River. When we come together as Salmon Peoples, and work collaboratively as Nations and communities, we can more effectively steward this watershed that sustains us.
The synthesis of Indigenous Knowledge with leading-edge western science creates impactful results. Our teams are also engaged in technical studies through tagged salmon releases.

This Indigenous Peoples Day, please show your support as we reintroduce salmon into the upper Columbia and revitalize our salmon cultures:
