Shayla Lawrence is a Fisheries Operational Biologist for the Okanagan Nation Alliance Fisheries Department (ONAFD) and a member of the Okanagan Indian Band. Shayla completed her Bachelor of Science from the University of British Columbia in 2000, and has been with the ONAFD since. Shayla is also a member of the College of Applied Biology.
Shayla has played a pivotal role in the development of the ONA’s fisheries department. She provides supervision and guidance for many different projects, including the Sockeye Reintroduction into Skaha Lake and the kł cp̓əlk̓ stim̓ hatchery start-up. Her role has grown to include contract management, liaising with project partners, as well as community outreach and education and department administration with a strong focus in HR, finance and management.
Shayla is blessed with three wonderful children which pushes her to better understand the importance of fishing rights and related practices—now and for future generations.
