Niix lkwi (Good day), my name is Elaine Harvey and my traditional name is Wanux’ni. I come from the Kah-milpah Band (Rock Creek) of the Yakama Nation. I currently work for the Yakama Nation Fisheries as the Hydro Systems Oversight Coordinator for the past year and I was previously a fisheries biologist managing the Rock Creek Fisheries Project for the past 15 years. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Aquatic and Fisheries Sciences from the University of Washington and Master’s of Science degree in Resource Management from Central Washington University. I am also a current doctorate student at the University of Idaho in the Natural Resources Department. I will discuss the current status of hydro systems in the Columbia River Basin and the cumulative effects these hydropower systems have on our stocks of salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, Pacific Lamprey, and other native resident fish species. I’ll also speak to climate change and our concern as fisheries managers on the future of the many fish stocks in the Columbia Basin. The salmon are interconnected to all our traditional foods and are an important indicator species of habitat condition in their natal streams. We all are salmon people and retain that connection to the spirit of the salmon.
